LegacyFC: Howdy Charlie. Do you mind introducing yourself real quick to Houston? Tell us how you gained your interest in combat sports, and more specifically, your interest in MMA?

Charlie Ontiveros: Hey, I’m Charlie Ontiveros “American Bad Boy” or if you’re a 2 Fly fan you may know me as “Karate Boy” or “Bitch”. Haha..

Well watching the Ninja Turtles got me into Tae Kwon Do when I was 6, and around 15 my dad and I started dipping our toes into MMA with Noe Herrera. My dad a pushed for it little more than me, because I had to do it behind my mom’s back, since she didn’t want me to have anything to do with MMA—”too dangerous.”

LegacyFC: What is the gym’s name that you train out of?

Charlie: Hard Head Hitters

LegacyFC: How would you describe the training environment there?

Charlie: Man, training at HHH is a blast, never a dull moment. We’re just one big happy family over here. There are no egos, no wannabes, and no conflicts. We train hard, so the fight is easy. The same goes for our sister school, 1MMA, that I train at also.

LegacyFC: What is it like training under your father?

Charlie: Training with my dad as my coach is difficult sometimes. When it comes down to it, you need someone looking out for your best interest, and who would do that better than your own father.

LegacyFC: What would you say is your strongest suit?

Charlie: Right now my strong suit is my stand up because I’ve been doing Tae Kwon Do for almost 15 years, but my ground game is catching up quick. I think I’m starting to like the ground more.

LegacyFC: Do you have any jitters coming into this fight, since it’s the main event, and, furthermore, is a title fight?

Charlie: Oh yea, I’m always nervous before a fight. That is what keeps me levelheaded. A nervous fighter is a smart fighter. It keeps aware and on guard. I just try to make it not so obvious while fighting. And as far as the title, well that’ll just be a bonus… I just want Levi.

LegacyFC: As I asked Levi, there seems to be a lot of trash talking going on for this fight, especially for a couple of amateurs. From your perspective, why has there been so much pre-fight jaw-jacking?

Charlie: Well, just like Levi, said I was respectful to his face, and still am respectful when not around him. I’m not taking him lightly at all. But when I got on TheCageDoor podcast and gave my opinion, I was simply stating facts. Like I feel my stand up is better than his, and that his last fight did not impress me one bit, and it seems that Levi got a little butt-hurt over it, saying I’m talking mess behind his back. But saying what I said on the podcast for all of Houston to hear, knowing Levi was listening is not saying mess behind his back. It was just letting him know that he needs to fight a little harder, if wants to beat me. And so, the jaw-jacking began. I think Levi is taking trash talking over the edge, especially with all of the name-calling going on and cursing. I personally thought he was better than that. He says he wants to go pro after this fight, but I don’t think he knows “pro” means “professional” and you have to be that way.

LegacyFC: What has this trash talking done for you in terms of personal motivation?

Charlie: All of the trash talking hasn’t really done anything for me except give me a few minutes of entertainment. Other than that, it doesn’t bother me. I just want to fight.

LegacyFC: How do you see this fight going?

Charlie: Ok, the bell will ring, I’ll meet Levi in the middle of the cage, and the rest you’ll have to wait and see. But win or lose, I’m putting on a show for the fans, so that they get their money’s worth.

Good luck, Levi.

LegacyFC: Is there anyone that you’d like to thank?

Charlie: Yes. For starters, God—nothing would be possible without him; my dad who is also my best friend; my mom for making healthy food taste good; my sister and my fiancé for putting up with me during my weight cut; my wrestling coach, Kung Fu Panda; submission coach, Raul; and standup coach, the guy who puts its altogether, Mondo De Leon. My Team HHH, Team Unleash and Streamline for being there for me and all my friends, fans, and family for the support. Last, but not least, Legacy for giving me this interview and title shot. Thank you guys!

LegacyFC: Thank you Charlie. Good luck in your welterweight title match against Levi West this Saturday at The House of Blues.

Our specialty was to modify cars and offer full repair services along with collision repair. DEVIATE was one of the first to develop new services, engine swaps, custom wheel fitments, and alignments. Our other locations only offer general repair, and that is what sets the newest location apart from the rest. Today, DEVIATE provides services to customers who desire our creative skills and ideas to uniquely customize their own personal automobiles, along with offering to the same customer all access to full general repair needs; meaning we can handle all your automotive needs and demands.

LegacyFC: Hey Levi, it’s been awhile since we last spoke. What is new in the 2Fly Universe?

Levi West: HAHA. Everything has been great! Just the regular routine of training hard and winning fights. Trying to move a step closer to my dream of winning a UFC title. Making big leaps forward in 2k12.

LegacyFC: You have certainly been very active this past year with 4 fights in 1 year. What have you learned about yourself?

Levi West: Yeah man, I love competing and staying in top shape, so as long as I am injury-free you will see me in the cage a lot. I hope to get 4 or 5 fights in every year, maybe 6 if I’m lucky! I have learned a lot about myself over the past year. Mainly about my work ethic. I use to train once a day and think I was a great fighter until I fought Geoff Neal. That fight opened my eyes up, and I realized I’m not invincible. Now I train 3 times a day, usually 5 to 6 days a week. But I am in the gym 7 days a week doing something. I would definitely call myself a gym rat. I know I’m one of the hardest working MMA fighters in Houston and it will pay off this next fight.

LegacyFC: Do you feel that the competition level in your weight class is comprised of some of the best talent in the Greater Houston Area?

Levi West: Definitely. The welterweight division is stacked full of great talent and up an comers. Houston is growing fast, and so is the level of fighters. In the near future, we will be a force to be reckoned with! #HouMMA!!

LegacyFC: I hear that that you have been doing some cross-training over at Greg Jackson’s Gym in New Mexico. Tell us about that experience.

Levi West: MAN IT’S AWESOME UP HERE! I can’t say enough great things about Jackson’s. Everyone is a high-level fighter, so you when you step on the mat, it feels like you are going to war. I’m not going to lie, I get nervous before I spar up here because I am out of my element, and I know that every round we will be going 80-90% hard, so that’s great! Also the altitude up here will get you in tremendous shape as well. I stay at Donald Cerrone’s and Leonard Garcia’s ranch when I am up here, and the elevation is like 6,000 feet higher then Jackson’s, which is in Albuquerque. Between Team Tooke and cross training at Jackson’s, I don’t feel like any of my opponents are training harder or with higher level guys than me.

LegacyFC: Did you get to spar with any of the top fighters out of that gym, like Jon Jones, Carlos Condit, or Donald Cerrone?

Levi West: I usually get work in with Cerrone every day, but he hurt his knee. We all went wake boarding when I got to his ranch, and he re-injured it again on the lake, so he is resting all week. I was trying to get a round in with Jones, but he is only working with heavyweights and top-level wrestlers to prepare for Evans. But I did get to spar with Carlos Condit. I felt like I did really well against him, it was a back and forth stand up battle. I also got to spar with a few Bellator welterweights and other great fighters. Great work for me!

I think I’ll get to grapple with Jon Jones here in a few minutes for an hour. I’ll let know you if I do and how it goes. (Levi did get to grapple with Mr. Jon Jones)

LegacyFC: Levi, maybe it is because that your fight coming up is a title fight, or maybe you guys really don’t like each other. Either way, there seems to be a bit of trash talking going on between you and Charlie Ontiveros. Care to comment on it?

Levi West: It all started because Charlie would be real friendly in person when I would see him at events and we shook hands every time, and I was like “man he’s a cool guy”…But then he started saying he is going to knock me out and all kinds of garbage, when I wasn’t around; the first time I heard it was on TheCageDoor podcast. So that kind of made me mad, because don’t act cool in my face dog and talk shit behind my back. Girls do that and I just didn’t think that was cool.

LegacyFC: What does this trash talk do for you in terms of motivation?

Levi West: It lit a fire underneath my ass (no pun intended). I have never trained as hard, and I have never wanted to punch and kick someone in the face as much before. I’m not angry at all, just motivated. I know “hype” or whatever is a part of the game, but he tried hyping the fight up against the wrong person. Let’s go (expletive). I’m going to use something I heard Donald Cerrone say. It goes, “Haters are like crickets. They are loud until you walk up on them.” Charlie is being the cricket. We’ll see who’s talking when that cage door shuts, and I’ll guarantee it won’t be me.

LegacyFC: How do you envision this match turning out?

Levi West: This fight goes where ever I want it to go. I’ll break it down for you… My fist in his face… My kicks in his face… My hand getting raised…. My belt around my waist, and your new Legacy Welterweight Champion Levi “2 Fly” West (in Collin Cantrells voice) !

LegacyFC: Is there anyone that you would like to thank?

Levi West: I would like to thank you, Eric, for taking your time out of your day to interview me, and I want to thank my teammates. You guys are the best and I love you guys! Also, my manager Brett Boyce for helping me get to Jackson’s for a week and for doing what he does. Armbar Submission gear, Mr Nutrition, Derrick Blaylock with Athletic Republic, Revgear, MTW Management, TEAM TOOKE, my awesomely awesome coaches, and friends and family for the overwhelming support. Good luck in your welterweight title fight match against Charlie Ontiveros on April 14th at The House of Blues.

By Eric Hostetter

LegacyFC: Howdy Chris. Let’s start off with an easy softball question. How did you get started in MMA?

Chris Rose: I got started in MMA around 4 years ago. My friend asked me if I wanted to go watch some fights in Conroe, so I said yeah. Lane Yarbrough fought that night and won by KO. I then found out that he was a trainer in Huntsville, so I decided to go and join.

LegacyFC: Which gym is your home gym? Do you cross train at other gyms?

Chris: My home gym will always be Death Row MMA.

LegacyFC: What is the training environment like at Death Row MMA? Do you get to throw Collin around a little bit?

Chris: Since Lane has retired and Collin moved down to Houston, Death Row is a group of guys that are kind of like on the move. We have Andy Sandoval as our MMA trainer and Tucker Dierksheide and family as boxing coaches.

Believe it or not, Collin is a lot harder to throw around than he looks. That Mr. Clean-looking fellow has some old man strength going on.

LegacyFC: What do you feel is your strongest suit in your game?

Chris: My ground game is probably my strong suit. I hate getting hit in the face, so I try to avoid that. I’ve been hit hard before and I don’t like it.

LegacyFC: Aside from training, what do you do in your free time?

Chris: I really don’t have any free time, aside from training. I’m always trying to figure out how to make money. I love spending time with my family, especially my little girl. She just turned 1.

LegacyFC: What can you tell us about your opponent, Matt Reeves?

Chris: Here’s a tidbit for this fight. This is a rematch for me. I fought Matt Reeves on Feb 2011 at an Indian reservation. At the time, Matt was looking to make his 205 lbs debut, since we both are small for heavyweights. He was the heavyweight belt holder for that organization. I told his coach that I’ll fight him and give him a war at 205lbs. Well, it turned out he couldn’t make the weight, so I told him I’d fight him if he put his belt on the line. I weighed in at 212 lbs, while he was around 228 lbs and weighed in around 235 lbs on fight night. I ended up with a TKO victory early in the 2nd round. This kid has been obsessing over a rematch with me for over a year. He was 2-0 before me, so this is a bad blood revenge fight for him. I plan on making it fun for me and a nightmare for him.

LegacyFC: How much different are you now as a fighter as opposed to when you first fought Matt?

Chris: I think now as a fighter, I’m a lot more patient. I’m realizing that I can’t out-muscle a lot of people in my old age. I just turned 30. I’m trying to concentrate more on technique and cardio.

LegacyFC: As a fan of the sport, I always enjoy rematches because you get a chance to see who has adapted and improved and who hasn’t. Without spoiling what you are going to go out there and do, can you give us a small insight on your game plan?

Chris: My game plan is always the same. I’ll go out there and go honey badger on my opponent. It’s all fun.

LegacyFC: I saw on your Facebook wall that you were about to take a step towards a life-changing commitment. Tell us what you are about to do?

Chris: After being out for almost 10 years, I’ll be re-enlisting in the military this week and going into the National Guard. I was in the army back in the day. The military is a great way for me to stay motivated to not get lazy. The benefits they offer are great, ranging all the way from health insurance to getting college paid for, and also, I get a pretty plush retirement at the end of my career. I’m not getting any younger, so I need to think about those things.

I’m going back in as a cook. That’s a passion that I have. I love to make something from scratch and feed it to the family, and hearing them talk about how good it is. The military will allow me to do that and get paid for it so why not.

LegacyFC: Chris that is very commendable, and we thank you for your service and sacrifice. Is there anyone out there that you would like to thank?

Chris: I want to thank Collin and Mick for the opportunity to fight for Legacy. Alyssa Cantu, for being an awesome personal trainer, and all the guys who have pushed me along the way. My wife for being understanding to the sacrifices fighters have to make, anywhere between hours in the gym and funky diets to late night cardio sessions.

LegacyFC: Thank you Chris. Good luck in your match.

However, Charlie Ontiveros vs. Levi West may be the biggest one that we have seen. Both fighters are nearing the end of their amateur careers and riding hot streaks, and now want to test themselves against the best opponents in the region, if not the entire state. I would like to give you, the reader, an insight on the match up from behind the scenes on how this fight came about and what the outcome could mean.

I first met Charlie Ontiveros, Jr. while attending a fight on an Indian reservation in East Texas. The brash young man garnered a lot of attention at the event from the fans. I assumed it was because his father, Charles Ontiveros, Sr., was the promoter. I figured that the entire event was being held to build his martial arts school and probably offered little in the way of high level mixed martial arts talent. I have been to many “smokers” and the technical level of the fighters is generally very green. Charlie walked out wearing a worn out American flag karate uniform, and his walk out song was “Kung Fu Fighting”. Charlie would make quick work of his opponent and did so the next three times I watched him fight. The more I watched Charlie, the more I realized that he possessed something special in the way of talent. I was still curious as to how his abilities would fare against the talent-rich MMA community of Houston. I remember the exact moment that I introduced Charlie to Levi West. I was talking with Charlie and his dad at a MMA event in Houston, and Levi was walking around. I wanted to introduce them to Levi to convince them that 155 lbs was a better weight for Charlie because the 170 lbs fighters, like Levi, walked around much larger than Charlie. I remember introducing Levi as the top amateur welterweight in the state. I thought that this encounter would convince Charlie and his dad to start working Charlie’s weight down to avoid matches against such larger fighters. The introduction would have the opposite effect. Shortly after this, Charles would let me know that they wanted to fight Levi West. I thought they were crazy. I wanted to build up this young man slowly. I felt that a match with Levi would prove to be too much for the small town, family-trained fighter. I would succeed in delaying the fight as I continued to match Charlie up with smaller fighters that were very talented. Charlie would meet every challenge put in front of him, and earned the right to the fight he had asked for since he arrived.

Levi comes from an entirely different background from his upcoming opponent. Levi trains with UFC-caliber fighters on a daily basis. His main gym at Team Tooke is home to the best middleweight in the city if not the entire state. Andrew Craig is a current UFC competitor and former Legacy Middleweight Champion. Levi also has the luxury of training under Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Travis Tooke, who has trained many UFC fighters such as Yves Edwards. Levi’s main sparring partner, Guilherme Moreira, was our former welterweight champion. On top of all the talented people around Levi in Houston, he also travels to New Mexico to train at the Jackson Academy with fighters like Donald Cerrone and Jon Jones. It is no surprise that Levi is undefeated at 6-0. Levi’s management has pushed hard at getting a title shot in the Legacy Amateur Series and jumped at the chance to fight Charlie.

The banter back and forth between these two fighters has been tattooed across Facebook. Here are some choice excerpts:

This leads us to April 14, 2012 at the nearly sold out House of Blues. Something has to give. When Charlie and Levi enter the cage for the main event of the night, there will be much more on the line than the Legacy Amateur Series Welterweight Title. Something that cannot be strapped around your waste or placed in a display case at the gym. Pride will ultimately be the grand prize of the evening that these fighters must take to bed with them at night when they sleep.

Who will get the grand prize? We will find out April 14th.
